Leak Test Air


Leak testing is an essential operation in the SOFC cell production process, since it verifies that no leakage is associated to the electrochemical system, either internal to the system itself or towards the outside, simulating real operating condition.

Before the complete assembly of the SOFC cell, a crucial step is to verify the tightness of the electrolyte, which needs to be a dense and uniform layer. Indeed, its role is to transfer oxide ions from the cathode to the anode while no crossing of gas has to occur between the hydrogen and air channels.

If this layer resulted to be too permeable, then a decay in the performance of the cell would be expected.

Accordingly, the tightness of the SOFC cell is of paramount importance to ensure the efficiency and the long-term reliability of the fuel cell system.

Leak Test Air

HeTECH/Marposs machines perform air tightness tests for SOFC half-cells.

Each station has its own measuring device with touch screen display at sight, so that it is possible to look into the trend of pressure vs time of the test phase.

Thanks to the high resolution of the instruments (0.1 Pa), the system is able to detect the smallest pressure differences.

The fixture is specifically designed to accommodate a SOFC semi-cell, which consists of two layers: the electrolyte and the anode. It is already predisposed for future loading/unloading by an automatic system.

Our test systems include an industrial PC executing the HMI functions, while the simultaneous supervision of the process is performed by a PLC. The software is configurable, so it is possible to:

  • Set machine parameters
  • Create different recipes, according to required test parameters
  • Manage the automatic cycle as well as the manual cycle
  • Set counters and production data
  • Manage levels of access

Test pressures, rejection thresholds and productivity that all our machines can reach may vary according to the technical specifications of the component and the production needs of the User.
