In-Line Electrical Test Of Cylindrical Battery Cells

Marposs offers various quality control systems for the manufacturing of battery cells, offering solutions for both pre-production pilot lines and for mass production. Thanks to its consolidated experience in robotic automatic applications, Marposs offers solutions for use at the beginning-of line testing (BoL test) in module production, as well as in-line control or end-of-line testing (EoL test) in cell production.

Dedicated solutions are proposed according to the type of battery cellX prismatic, cylindrical or pouch.

The in-line test machines are completely automated, excluding human intervention in the loading and unloading operations. A robot or manipulator can move several battery cells at the same time, based upon the custom sizes required for the needs of each.  This contributes to very short cycle times of the production lines. Each station is able to process several cells simultaneously.

Test System for In-Line Check of Cylindrical Battery Cells

This system is dedicated to in-line control of the cells prior to electrolyte filling. An extremely flexible solution, it can process different size cells with varying diameters and lengths. Designed to be used as a transit station for cells, it is fed at the inlet by means of a pallet transport with re-tooling positions, and at the outlet with an accumulation belt. An anthropomorphic robot handles three cells at a time using a multiple gripping device, which moves them within the test station.

The testing cycle begins as the robot picks up the cells from the transport pallet and electrically connects them to perform an electrical insulation test in masked time with respect to the dimensional check. This testing station is unique in that it allows the electrical test to be carried out at the same time as the dimensional test. This results in reductions in time, station size and construction costs. A high resolution optical dimensional control system is used to measure the diameter and height of the three cells when the robot places them in the control area.

In a second station, the leak testing of the cells is carried out with helium in the vacuum chamber. Two testing devices, equipped with 3 chambers each, optimize the cycle time and manage the loading-unloading activities in masked time.

The machine design is scalable and can be adapted according to the production throughput requirements, providing for simultaneous management of more cells both in the measurement and insulation test station, and in the leak testing area.

For EoL test applications in the production of cells, or BoL in the assembly of modules, other electrical tests typical of finished cells (such as OCV, ACIR or DCIR) can also be integrated in the same dimensional control and insulation test station.

The safety of the tests is guaranteed by appropriate opening devices of the electrical circuit and fire prevention systems connected to the plant network.
