Distributed Digital Twins for industrial SMEs: a big-data platform (IoTwins)

Marposs is proud to be one of the 23 partners of IoTwins, an EU project part of the Horizon 2020 programme, with 20M€ of total fundings.

The project, hosted in the Emilia-Romagna Data Valley, has the main objective of creating “digital twins” known as digital copies of physical industrial processes that will be used by SMEs to simulate, test and optimize plants and infrastructure tools in advance, reducing costs and time consuming operations. In this scenario, the role of Marposs is to validate innovative business models that bring resources available in the cloud accessible to applications running on manufacturing machines related to the machine monitoring business.

IoTwins is born within the Big Data Association and Industries, with the collaboration of the University of Bologna, INFN, Cineca (for the HPC resources), ART-ER and Bonfiglioli Riduttori. The project will also include international leading companies and scientific institutions such as Siemens, the Supercomputing Centre in Barcelona and the Fraunhofer Institute in Munich.

The project, directed by Bonfiglioli Riduttori, is based on an elastic and distributed architecture paired with the use of HPC with big data in order to enable SMEs to access edge-enabled and cloud-based new technologies for streamlining plant operations with the help of digital models.

Marposs' test-bed wants to demonstrate that innovative technologies such as Deep Neural Networks (DNN) and cloud-based access to HPC resources can open new opportunities to more pervasive and transversal business models.

Marposs is also studying a “pay-per-use” platform solution for manufacturing line owners that will be developed alongside the IoTwins project outputs.
