THE NEED FOR 5G – ACCELERATING THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION TOWARDS THE FACTORIES OF THE FUTURE

EUROPEAN PROJECT 5G-SMART UNLOCKS THE VALUE OF 5G FOR SMART MANUFACTURING

5g smart manufacturing

5G is increasingly often in the news as it becomes the latest buzzword in consumer communications. But 5G is way more than just another bandwidth increase for video streaming or the next social applications playground.

Understanding the value that 5G can bring to the manufacturing and processing industries is key to unlocking its potential as an enabling technology for the digital transformation of Industry 4.0.

5G is a ground-breaking revolution, being designed with multiple industrial verticals in mind; it aims at being the comprehensive IIoT technology that is still missing today.

With a strong focus on machine-type communication, extending far beyond the ever-increasing data rates of mobile broadband, 5G supports communication with unprecedented reliability and low latencies, as well as massive connectivity.

5G specifications for ultra-reliable low-latency (URRLC) and massive Machine Type (mMTC) communications enable real-time monitoring of work pieces, process monitoring, predictive maintenance, as well as the creation of shop-floor digital twins and factory cloud solutions.

With its architecture of mixed public and non-public network deployments, 5G provides options to optimize the end-user operations in terms of both CAPEX and OPEX. At the same time, 5G offers a new level of security in terms of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, by means of both isolation from other networks and network slicing.

As a result, 5G is the seamless wireless communication technology and platform that is needed by future Smart Factories flexibility and efficiency requirements, from the field level to the cloud.

Marposs is part of the H2020 project funded by the European Commission. Together with other OT suppliers of the manufacturing industry (Bosch, ABB); telecommunication technology providers (Ericsson, Orange, T-Systems and more); ICT companies; as well as Research and academic partners, we're working to ensure that 5G will create real value for the manufacturing and processing industry.
