Tool setting and geometric checking on lathe

In order to compete, manufacturers must ensure that their lathes are as efficient as possible.

Conditions:

Being able to check the length, diameter, breakage and wear of the tool to be used, makes it possible to prevent damage to the machined part and thus reduce the number of rejects. This saves money, but also significantly reduces the machining time for each individual part.

Solution:

In order to remain competitive, manufacturers must ensure that their machining processes are fully controlled right from the start. These processes can be completed by introducing the following control elements:

  • Tool breakage
  • Tool geometry measurement
The Marposs high precision tool presetting arm enables manufacturers to optimise performance and cost. The system is modular, flexible and easy to install. It can be used on any type of lathe, irrespective of the tools and spindles in use. The arm is available in two versions:
  • MIDASET is the ideal solution when working with small production volumes. The arm is removed from the machine when the presetting procedure has been completed
  • MIDA TOOL EYE is the ideal solution in the case of medium to medium-large volumes. The arm, which may be activated manually, or in fully automatic mode, remains standing mounted on the machine
A special solution is provided by MIDA LASER, the fastest solution on the market, which includes a dedicated scan cycle for checking the tool profile.

TBD can can be fitted on this type of machine only to detect powered tools.

Benefits:

The measurement software enables the operator to:

  • Quickly measure the tools mounted in the turret using either automatic, semi-automatic or manual cycles.
  • Implement tool length and diameter offset corrections to an accuracy of 1 micron and
  • detect broken tools.
  • Automate production, thereby optimising productivity, quality, reliability and flexibility.
  • Decrease machining rejects and machine down time.
